Differs somewhat from state to state, but basically it should be considered at risk of dying in a number of months ... Based on the testimony of a doctor. Some states do not allow hospice if the patient showed signs of "lack of growth." Definitions vary, but is a common sign that not eating the patient ... or eat very little ... and lose weight. Sometimes the presence of pressure ulcers can be a criterion, but it is different. I suggest you see your local public health and whether they can give you the information you need ... or simply a palliative care agency and ask.
